Dark Irish Thriller
Karen's has a nice little new life in a small town with her husband and her daughter. She attends her AA meetings and is trying to forget the life she had before. Unfortunately for Karen she learns that your past cannot be simply locked away in a closet. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you in the form of Karl an old boyfriend with a less than sinister agenda than to get Karen to help him with a scam situation they were both involved in years before.
The movie is very dark and I don't mean "scary and deep" I mean I found it hard to see what was going on at times.
It was an OK premise and the actors do a good job with a mediocre movie plot. Karen's husbad was my favorite character and I found myself wondering if the movie was coming full circle in a way. Umm..things to ponder.
Wow
For a different side of Allen Leech, who plays Tom Branson on Downton Abbey, please watch this. It's awesome. Allen plays Karl, a twisted, manipulative, sad, sexy, creepy ex-boyfriend who will go to any length to get his girl back. Unexpected twist at the end, no spoilers here! Hope to see much more of this talented, awesome Irish actor.
Leech as Villain
Out of curiosity I bought the DVD after watching Allen Leech's increasingly competent and measured acting in Downton Abbey. Albeit low budget, the film was good overall. Viewers who associate Leech with a sympathetic character are in for a surprise; this character, Karl, is twisted. Leech as Karl at the dining room table was particularly chilling and effective. What a maniacal giggle! Amy Huberman, who earned the IFTA for best actress in a film for her role as Karen, was also praiseworthy. The third lead, Owen McDonnell, convincingly portrayed a husband ignorant of elements from his wife's premarital past. A cinematic masterpiece, no, but good entertainment with a message or two.
